Abstract
Background: Plant extracts and essential oils have long been used as effective and safe antifungal agents, and scientists today have a special focus on using these extracts. This study investigated the antifungal effects of eugenol, its nanoemulsion, and their synergistic effects with fluconazole on three standard strains of Candida albicans, Candida krusei, and Candida glabrata.
Materials and Methods: In this study, standard strains of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Candida krusei were exposed to various concentrations of eugenol extract, eugenol nanoemulsion, and their combination with fluconazole using the broth microdilution and checkerboard assay methods based on CLSI standard numbers M27-A3 and M27-S4. Then, using the ΣFIC index, the type of interaction between eugenol and eugenol nanoemulsion with fluconazole was interpreted.
Results: According to the findings of this study, the drug combinations of fluconazole-eugenol and fluconazole- nanoemulsion showed non-interactive effects on C. albicans and C. krusei, and synergistic and additive effects, respectively, on C. glabrata,.
Conclusion: The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of eugenol and eugenol nanoemulsion in the studied strains was similar or close to each other. Also, the FICI index obtained for eugenol in all strains was better than the FICI index of eugenol nanoemulsion. Therefore, despite the proven benefits of nanoemulsions, this structure interferes with the interaction with fluconazole.
