Comparison the effects of 12 weeks increasing aerobic exercise & licorice consumption on adiponectin levels in obese women

Abstract

Introduction: Adiponectin is a newly discovered adipocin that is secreted by adipocytes and its reduction is a major
contributor to obesity-related diseases, including insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of 12 weeks of increasing aerobic exercise and consumption of glucose on adiponectin and insulin resistance in obese women.
Materials and Methods: This research is a quazi -experimental, pre-test and post-test with control group. Forty obese women with a mean age of 37.9 ± 7.12 years, weight 90.8 ± 3.71 kg, and body mass index of 36.75 ± 2.39 kg/m2 were selected and randomly divided into four equal groups including three the experimental group) aerobic training group (10 people), the licorice consumption group (10), the combined group (aerobic training and licorice consumption) (10) and the control group (10). An initial blood sample of 10 ml of anterior vein of the subjects was taken to measure adiponectin, glucose, insulin and insulin resistance. Then Subjects in the training group participated in an increased aerobic training program of 12 weeks, 3 sessions per week (10 to 30 minutes using treadmill). Licorice consumption group consumed a capsule containing 300 mg of licorice root powder for 12 weeks every day after a meal. The combined group combines an aerobic training and licorice consumption. The control group did not participate in any regular training program during the study. After 12 weeks, all variables again were measured in four groups. For comparing the variables among the groups, one-way ANOVA and also for intra-group comparisons of Associate t-test was used. The significance level was considered to be P≤0.05.
Results: The results showed that plasma adiponectin level significantly increased in all three experimental groups, while insulin resistance, body weight and body mass index decreased (P<0.05). Meanwhile, these indices in the control group had not changed.
Conclusion: It can be concluded that these exercises, along with the use of licorice to lower body weight and improve
insulin resistance in obese women, can be used.
