Abstract
The status of providing medical services to patients in the emergency wards can be indicator
of medical service delivery in every part of hospital. We determined the level of patient's
satisfaction in emergency departments of the hospitals affiliated to Shiraz University of
Medical Sciences and planned appropriate interventions for promotion of this level.
Methods:
This research was an interventional study in the hospitals affiliated to Shiraz University of
Medical Sciences. We used a questionnaire with 18 items for data collection. In the first phase
of our study, some interventions were implemented such as special attention to cleaning of
emergency departments, more respect to patients, attending round supervision, and increased
space of some emergency wards. After 6 months, the second phase of the study was done.
The data were analyzed, using SPSS 11.5 software and appropriate tests.
Results:
508 patients in the first stage of this study, and 585 patients in the second stage filled out the
questionnaire. The level of patients' satisfaction improved in the post-intervention stage
(P<0.05). In the pre-intervention stage, the highest and lowest levels of patients' satisfaction
were professional and cost & comfort services, respectively. In the post-intervention stage,
professional services had the highest level.
Conclusion:
The results of this study showed that interventions were effective on improvement of patients'
satisfaction. Promotion of the quality of services and continuous monitoring of them could
improve patients' satisfaction in emergency wards.
