Abstract

Abstract:

Background & Objective: Cryptosporidium parvum is an apicomplexan protozoan parasite which causes acute diarrhea in both human and wide range of animals, no efficacious treatment have been described for it. The aim of this study is determination of Prevalence of Cryptosporidium parvum infection in adults with acute diarrhea Referred to clinical laboratories in Jahrom city by modified Ziehl-Neelsen and Nested PCR methods.

Materials & Methods:  In this descriptive study, 117 acute diarrheic patients that referred to Jahrom laboratory centers were studied. Epidemiological information of Patients were collected using a questionnaire. Stool samples of the patients concentrated by Formol-ether and after staining with modified Ziehl-Neelsen, were examined for presence of oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum by light microscope. Also, Also, all samples were tested for the presence of Cryptosporidium parvum by Nested PCR method. The data were analyzed using

SPSS 16 software.

Results: Of 117 adults with acute diarrhea, one case (0.9%) using both staining Ziehl Nelson and Nested PCR were positive for Cryptosporidium parvum.

Conclusion: It was observed that the percentage of contamination to this parasitis at both

microscopic and Nested PCR P methods are the same.
