Effect of pomegranate peel hydroAlcoholic extract and vitamin E supplementation on strengthens antioxidant defense system in rats submitted to exhaustive exercise stress.

Abstract

Background: Acute exhaustive exercise increase production of reactive oxygen. It may be inefficient antioxidant capacity of the body. Therefore exercise training and antioxidants consumption have been shown to up regulate antioxidant protection. The present study aimed to determine the protective effect of pomegranate peel hydro alcoholic extract supplementation on oxidative responses induced by an exhaustive exercise schedule in rats.

Materials and Methods: Thirty two male rats were evenly divided into: (1) control: received saline (0.2 ml saline/ rat) by oral administration via epigastric tube.(2) received oral administration of 200 mg/kg Pomegranate peel hydro alcoholic extract.(3) received oral administration of 250 mg/kg Pomegranate peel hydro alcoholic extract. (4) Received oral administration of vitamin E  5 mg/kg. Animals were submitted to swimming exercise for an 8-week. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected for serum. samples were analyzed for glutathione peroxidase , catalase activities, levels of Malondialdehyde and glutathione.

Results: Glutathione peroxidase and catalase activities were significantly increases in PPHE200)97.61±5.91)GPX (4.38±0.45)CAT ,PPHE250)105.63±2.88)GPX (3.57±0.24)CAT and vit E )110.01±8.36)GPX (3.6±0.59)CAT than in the control)76.72±4.49)GPX (2.85±0.27)CAT (p<0.05). Levels of glutathione were significantly increases in PPHE200)89.39±6.98), PPHE250(93.54±3.72) and vitE(107.86±4.76) than in the control (75.26±1.35) (p<0.05).  Levels of Malondialdehyde was significantly reduced in PPHE200(3.62±0.15), PPHE250(3.35±0.51) and vitE(3.26±0.25)treated than in control (5.88±0.56) (p<0.05).

Conclusion: In this study, it was shown that Pomegranate peel hydro alcoholic extract supplementation may be beneficial in antioxidant defense system improvement and reduce oxidative stress induced by an exhaustive exercise.
