Introduction: Falls and accidents in the elderly leading to different kinds of physical damage and most common type of trauma in them that represent significant causes of morbidity and mortality in our country but are not well characterized. The purpose of this issue is to determine some epidemiologic aspects of trauma in seniors.
Method: We organized a cross sectional study of a series of patients aged 65 years old and older with all types of damages secondary to trauma, which has been referred to Shiraz Trauma Centers.
Data were gathered from emergency rooms daily in winter 2004 and the follow up and outcome were gathered from patients' files in different wards.
Data analysis was done with descriptive statistics using EPI info 2002 soft ware.
Results: The studied group was 207 patients who had including criteria .61% were male and the reminder 39% were female. Most of patients were between 65-69 years old. The most common type of trauma in this age group was falling down.43% has been admitted to hospital more than five days and the average of the days admission was 7.63± 6.9 days. Occurring accident in home (29.3% of cases) was more common than other places. In hours between 6pm-12pm 35.27% of accidents happened. The highest fatality rate was among car accidents patients and was 12.3%.
Conclusion: With attention to increasing of trauma in elderly people and also high rate of disability and mortality in this group, implementing preventive strategies |
