Introduction: Optometrists frequently encounter patients with migraine headache that patients suspect visual anomalies trigger headaches. According to controversial results between migraine headaches and refractive errors, the purpose of this study was investigation of relationship between refractive errors and migraine.

Materials and methods: In this case-control study, 60 patients with neurologically diagnosed migraine who had inclusion criteria in study group and 60 in control group were studied. At first patients were screened by standard headache questionnaire and diagnosis refined by neurologist. The Refractive errors were determined by retinoscopy and corrected if necessary. The control group was selected from the persons that matched based on sex and age. Data were analyzed in SPSS.13 using

Man-withney u test and multiple logistic regression. According to high correlation between spherical equivalent of right and left eye, only results of left eye presented.

Results: In this study mean of sphere in case and control group were 0.12 ± 0.53 D and 0.04±1.58 D (p>0.05), mean of spherical equivalent in study and control group was –0.38±1.75 and –0.14±1.74 D (p>0.05) and mean of astigmatism in study and control group was –0.85±0.88 and –0.5±1.0 D (p<0.001), respectively. Hence, mean of astigmatism was different statistically between two groups and in multiple logistic regression, only this variable stayed in model (p=0.04).

Conclusions: The results of this study showed higher rates of astigmatism in migraine group than control. Hence, people who experience migraine headaches should attend their optometrist regularly to ensure that their refractive errors were appropriately corrected.
