The prevalence of Parasitic Diseases in Child kindergartens of Jahrom using three diagnostic stool test, Scotch test and formol-ether methods-2013

Introduction: Study of parasitic infections provides knowledge about pollution of environment and also of the types of parasites. It also provides a picture of health status of the individual and pollution of food and water supply, as well as state of sewage disposal. Thus, the present study aimed to determinate Prevalence Parasitic infections in Child kindergartens in the city of Jahrom.
Method: This cross-sectional-Analytic study, conducted in 2013 on a population of 451 Child kindergartens in the city of Jahrom. Sampling was conducted according to cluster sampling method, and data were collected using questionnaires. Parents were invited to the kindergarten for briefing and training about sampling method. Each was given a capped container for collecting stool samples on the top, and 1 slide and a labeled Scotch sticky tape. Data were analyzed with SPSS16 software using descriptive statistics and of Chi-square tests.
 
Result: prevalence of parasitic infections were observed in 7.1% in stool test, 5.1% in Scotch method, and 14.4% in formol-ether method. According to formol-ether diagnostic test, the prevalence of Oxyuris was found 5.1%, Giardia 7.1%, Ascaris 0.9%, and Hymenolepis nana 0.2%.
 
Conclusion: The prevalence of Giardia parasite infection in Child kindergartens, is higher than other parasites  .  Also, due to the different amounts of parasitic infections in three diagnostic methods, it is recommended to use a higher sensitivity formol-ether diagnostic method to detect and diagnose these infections in children.
